Curriculum Notes
This month in reading we will continue our study of non-fiction or information texts Many students are now beginning to read levels which provide less picture support, and they have more complex story lines. Informational text at this level will have more specific vocabulary. A big push during this unit is to remind them to "lean in" to the challenges they encounter when reading harder books. I will address comprehension and critical thinking and remind them to think about what would make sense based on what they have read so far.
Writing- We will learn to use writing conventions to make their writing clear while learning to write informational texts that teach others about a topic.
Math-Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size) ; build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. Compose two dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.
Science- Understand how forces (pushes and pulls) affect the motion of an object.
Explain the importance of a push or pull to changing the motion of an object.
Explain how some forces (pushes and pulls) can be used to make things move without touching them, such as magnets.
Predict the effect of a given force on the motion of an object, including balanced forces.
